watch your own dream on Youtube

OMG! One day you will watch your own dream on Youtube!

OMG is right! I found this fantastic slideshow today on omg-facts called 11 Shocking Facts about Dreams that will Rock your World. One of slides certainly did rock my world. It seems that scientists have taken the first step towards one day being able to map and reproduce dreams and memories. Imagine one day being able to watch your own dream on Youtube… how amazing would that be?

“Practical applications of the technology might help us understand what goes on in the minds of people who cannot communicate verbally such as stroke victims, coma patients and people with neurodegenerative diseases.”

“We are opening a window into the movies in our minds.”– Professor Jack Gallant
The research behind it all…

In 2011, Professor Jack Gallant, a neuroscientist at UC Berkeley used functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) and computational models to reconstruct movie clips that people test subjects had already viewed. He recorded brain activity in the visual cortex of the brain while subjects watched a set of movie clips, then using a computational model, decoded the brain signals and reconstructed the movie clip with remarkable accuracy.

He is quoted as saying “We are opening a window into the movies in our minds.” According to the articlefrom the Berkeley News Centre, “Practical applications of the technology might help us understand what goes on in the minds of people who cannot communicate verbally such as stroke victims, coma patients and people with neurodegenerative diseases.”

Read the article from the Berkeley News Centre and see the results of Prof Gallant’s breakthrough experiment at http://newscenter.berkeley.edu/2011/09/22/brain-movies/

What a fantastic breakthrough in the study of dreams and internal imagery! What do you think?
